LIFE CYCLE- Design

SETS and Props

With Sets and Props we have certain materials, processes and external production that are common inputs and outputs in our set design and production process:
• Wood, Metal, Foam, Muslin and Paint
• Cut, glue, weld, paint, staple and screw
•Air quality, waste and deforestation

Inputs

Inputs refer to anything that goes into the production of scenery and can be broken down into two categories: Materials and processes.  The process portion specifically relates to the process in which we as theatre practitioners use the material inputs.
INPUT-MATERIALS
Though countless materials are used in production and design, here we focus on the 5 most common  materials usually used in some form in every set and or props design:
• Wood
•Metal
• Foam
•Muslin
•Paint

During our construction of sets and props, we focus on specific processes to complete the design. These are some of the more common processes which we will focus on this this section:
• Cut
• Glue
• Staple
• Screw
• Weld
• Paint

Outputs

Outputs refer to what produced from the construction of sets and props and again will focus on 2 categories: Production and Process.  The production aspect focuses again on materials but specifically, what these materials do to both people and planet when being made, before they even come into the scene shop.  Output process, focuses specifically on the outputs that arise from the production process of the specific material as well as the output into the scene shop itself as it is being used during construction..
outputs-production
During the production of materials, people and planet are greatly affected.  Again, we focus on the 5 most common materials usually used in  set and or props:
• Wood

•Metal
• Foam
•Muslin
•Paint
outputs-process
This is the byproducts created in both the production of the material as well the production within the scene shop.  this process focuses specifically on 4 of the most disturbing and health effecting outputs related to scenic construction:
• VOCs
• Air Quality
• Waste
• Deforestation

In addition to specific pages for set and prop materials, processes and production, here are links to specific articles that relate to sets and props that you may find interesting.  These can also be found in the resources link.
